Elementary School Fundraisers

The pig
Two Tri-County Elementary schools
held major fundraisers during the month of October. Carleton Consolidated
held a Fall Fair which raised over $4000.00. The main attraction of the
fair was the "Kiss the Pig" event. For a dollar, participants could vote
for a staff member or parent and whoever received the most votes at the end of
the day had to kiss Sophie the pig.

Carleton Consolidated Principal, Mrs. Gallagher
As luck would have it, school
Principal, Mrs. Gallagher, received the most votes and did indeed kiss the pig
after some "minor" encouragement from the crowd.

Barton Consolidated bottle drive
Another major fundraiser was
Barton Consolidated's annual bottle drive. Two dozen volunteers including
students, staff, parents, Home & School Members, and members of the community
collected and sorted 15,743 bottles. In total, $958.10, including cash
donations was raised thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers.

Fire
Prevention Week at Forest Ridge Academy

October 7 to 13 is Fire
Prevention Week and the students at Forest Ridge Academy have been busy learning
about escape plans and various fire prevention techniques. During an
assembly, local firefighter, Marilee Ross, explained the importance of having an
escape plan at home, as that is the focus of this year's Fire Prevention Week.

Ms. Ross
explained that Fire Prevention Week was started to commemorate the Great Chicago
Fire of October 8 and 9, 1871. The disastrous fire was responsible for
killing more than 250 people and left 100,000 more homeless destroying 17,000
buildings.

Firefighters dressed in full gear
were on hand to demonstrate what it looks and sounds like when they enter a
burning building and even brought along a fire truck for the students to see
close up. Students also received information posters, magnets, and
stickers to take home as reminders of what they can do to prevent fires and how
to stay safe in the event of one.

Thanks to MacDonald Chisholm
Trask Insurance for sponsoring the assembly and to Linda Swaine who was on hand
to represent them.

South Centennial Selected as
Poster School

South Centennial Elementary
School has been selected as the Tri-County poster school for the 2007
Walk-to-School Week – a program sponsored by Active Safe Routes to
Schools. As part of Walk-to-School Week, all of the students at South
Centennial participated in a street sweep. On October 5, the students
walked from their school, to the Tri-County Regional School Board office,
collecting waste on every street in between.

When the students arrived at the Board office they were met
by a Bill Duffus Remove-All Limited
waste truck where they disposed of the waste they had collected. After a
healthy snack of apples and bottled water, the students were thanked, and
presented with a number of gifts, by René Belliveau, Education Coordinator for
Waste Check.

Dustin Goodwin, Sport Animator for the TCRSB, was
on hand to thank all of the students, on behalf of the Board, for their
enthusiasm and willingness to make sure that their community stays
environmentally healthy while being active all at the same time. In addition,
Mr. Goodwin presented the students to with two Dance-Dance Revolution
video game mats for their school. Looks of surprise and gasps could be seen and
heard among all of the students as they excitedly accepted the gifts.
