Highlights from the September 5, 2006
Tri-County Regional School Board Meeting

African Nova Scotian (RCH) Committee

Superintendent Landry distributed a revised copy of a staff report on the African Nova Scotian Ad Hoc Committee.  There was agreement that the Committee should not be Ad Hoc but rather a Standing Committee of the Board.  There was also a motion made to change the name of the Committee to the RCH Committee in order to encompass all minority groups.  The Board instructed staff to work with the structure of this committee further & to bring back a further revised report for Board perusal.

Staff Recognition Committee

A Motion was made to resurrect the Staff Recognition Committee.  This Committee would be Ad Hoc & would consist of the following individuals:

  • Board Member Surette

  • Board Member Brewer

  • Board Member Atkinson

  • A representative from each of the union groups & a representative from the non-union group

  • Superintendent of Schools

  • Director of Human Resources

  • Director of Programs & Student Services

  • Director of Operations

  • Communications Officer

Digby Area Learning Association (DALA) Facility Addition Request

The Director of Operations presented a report stemming from a letter dated June 29, 2006 from the DALA requesting the Tri-County Regional School Board (TCRSB) to add an addition onto the Digby Adult High School.  The addition is to accommodate a lab, office, and a meeting room.

The Board asked The Director of Operations to gather further information and bring it forward at the next Board Meeting.  The Executive Director of the DALA & the Board's Coordinator of Community Learning will also be asked to attend the next meeting to field Board Members' questions.

September 19th Board Meeting

The next regular Board meeting that was scheduled for September 19th, 2006 will be cancelled & the next regular Board Meeting will be held on October 3rd, 2006.  This is to accommodate a request from the Department of Education to hold a public information/input session on September 19th regarding school closures.  The Board feels that it would be in its best interest to be in attendance at this information session.

Breakfast Program funding

The Superintendent shared a letter that was received from Nova Scotia Health Promotion explaining that the TCRSB would be receiving $43,500.00 in funding for its elementary school breakfast programs.  He also stated that the Yarmouth Exhibition Association had made a donation to the Breakfast Program in the amount of $800.00.  These monies will go along way in ensuring that TCRSB elementary students are able to start their day off with a nutritional breakfast.

YCMHS Windows

On September 25, 2006, replacement of the windows in the 1988 wing of the High School will begin.  The Director of Operations stated that one person has been hired to manage the handling of the existing windows.  No students or staff are permitted to handle the existing windows.
