Grade 5 Carleton Student
Presented with Sledge

Contributed by Carleton School:
Carleton School Principal Linda Gallagher and
Physical Education Teacher Lori Munro-Sigfridson had the pleasure of
presenting grade 5 student Dylan A. with a sledge. A sledge is a piece of
adaptive equipment that is used by persons with disabilities to ice skate
and play hockey. The sledge is a bucket seat placed on two metal blades. A
metal base extends forward for leg support. Participants use shortened
hockey sticks with picks on each end to propel forward.
This is the first piece of adaptive equipment of this kind in Yarmouth
County. Thanks to the generosity of the Yarmouth Hockey Association,
students with physical disabilities will have the opportunity to have on ice
experiences along side their peers, opening a door to whole new world of
physical and social activity. The blades of the sledge can be replaced
during the off season with wheels enabling participants to utilize the
equipment throughout the year.
We hope that this is just the beginning of bringing adaptive sport to the
area. The sledge will be housed at the Mariner's Center for community use.
Sledge hockey is a sport designed to allow participants with physical
disabilities to play ice hockey. Sledge hockey was invented in the early
1960's in Stockholm, Sweden at a rehabilitation center. It is currently on
of the most popular sports in the Paralympic Games. The Canadian Men's
Sledge Hockey Team won the gold metal at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in
Turin, Italy.
