For the second consecutive year,
Mr. Rideout’s grade 5 class from Arcadia Consolidated placed second in the
Discovery Centre’s Science Film Competition. This year’s entry was entitled
"Global Warming: Can We Save the Earth?" Students began the project in
January and worked over two months planning, drawing storyboards, writing
script, filming, and editing to produce their 10-minute DVD.

The judges - including scientists
from the Discovery Centre and St. Mary’s University, and professionals from the
television industry – praised the Arcadia entry for "Fantastic advice for saving
energy and therefore the planet! Excellent use of natural backdrops/locations.
Great presentation styles. Lots of great science content. Good use of
graphs/visuals. Great volume." They summarized it as "Very well thought-out!"

The class traveled to Halifax recently for a screening of the
top three videos from the Province, plus an honorable mention. They were treated
to lunch, followed by time to explore the Discovery Centre, including seeing the
Centre’s own "Climate Change Show" hosted by a sheep voiced by Rick Mercer.
The students had a wonderful experience and represented Arcadia Consolidated and
the Tri-County Regional School Board proudly.
